One of the oldest temples located in Rajnandgaon district 18 km. North West of Kawardha is the temple of Bhoramdev. It was built during 11th century in the Chandela style of architecture full of beauty and grace. It is also referred to as ‘Khajuraho of Chattisgarh’. According to many, this temple was an important monument of the Gondas of Chattisgarh. But historical records lead us to believe that this temple belonged to the Nagvanshis and was built by King Ramchandra of the Nag dynasty.
Located near a village called Chhapri, in a valley placed among the circular range of Makel mountains it rises imposingly to a height of 100 ft. above the ground. It is a fine example of intricate and exquisite piece of sculpture depicting beautiful carvings of couples, elephants, horses, dancers both male & female, idols of Lord Ganesh & Natraj etc. The entrance of the garbh-grah of the temple is made of shining black stone with beautiful statues around it.
The palaces of Mandwa and Madan Manjari, covering an area of 5 kms, are part of the same temple group and have erotic sculptures similar to those found at Khajuraho in Orissa.
It is a place of pilgrimage since it is built.Its architect resembles to Khajuraho and sun temple of konark. It have some stunning sculptures like khajuraho on its wall and the difference lies inscape.This temple is dedicated to lord shiva and is one of his few ancient temple structures where pilgrims are still allowed to worship.
